Yuna Hijirisawa is a supporting character in Love Live! Superstar!!. She was a third year student (initially a second year in Season 1) at Kozu Girls' High School until she graduated in the second season's finale. She is a co-founder of Sunny Passion. Her image color is passion sunflower.

Background

Yuna Hijirisawa was born and raised in Kōzu-shima, and has a strong emotional connection to the island. In Volume 1 of From The Passion Island, she recounts hearing about the island's declining population, and that many of her friends from middle school moved to the city for high school. Wanting to help the island, she formed Sunny Passion with her childhood friend Mao Hiiragi. She believes that by being school idols, they'll be able to make the island more lively and show everyone how great it is.

Yuna has a close relationship with Mao, having grown up with her on the island. She admires Mao for her calm and composed personality and for keeping her in check when she gets out of control. She even goes as far as to say she's "the best partner she's ever had". She's also a bit jealous of Mao's figure, and hopes her limbs can grow longer so she can look more mature like Mao.

Just like Mao, she helps Liella! despite their rivalry. She says the reason she cares about them is because she sees similarities between them and Sunny Passion, as they both started out inexperienced and continued being idols because of their love for singing with friends. Although her and Mao are on friendly terms with Liella!, they make it clear that they still intend to beat them in the Love Live! competition.

Personality

Yuna is described as the "Sun" of Sunny Passion for her cheerful personality and bright smile that warms people's hearts. She's talkative, kind, and friendly, and although she describes herself to Mao as someone who "saves her favorite foods and things for last," she can be impulsive and even impatient at times. In Volume 3 of From The Passion Island, she is scolded by Mao for shouting suddenly without any concern for the neighbors, and in Volume 5 she insists that her and Mao begin making costumes as soon as they get back home, even though they planned to start the next day. Despite her high energy, she can also be observant and insightful, such as when she gives advice to Chisato Arashi in Season 1 Episode 5 of the anime.

Yuna's energetic personality contrasts with Mao's calm and composed demeanor, and this contrast is one of the key features of Sunny Passion. When describing her role in Sunny Passion, she describes herself as "the funny one" and Mao as "the straight man". In From The Passion Island, Mao Hiiragi describes Yuna as a straightforward person who gives her wings and that she became a school idol because Yuna was with her. Mao describes Yuna's sincere smile as one of her key traits, and says that her smile is what makes Sunny Passion shine. Mao also says she's great at coming up with ideas, and while Mao handles coordinating the practice schedule, they both work together on costumes and songs.

Appearance

Yuna has green eyes and shoulder length yellow-orange hair, which she ties back in a ponytail. She's also unique in that she has shark teeth, and is the only character in the franchise to have such a trait.

Etymology

• The name Yuna means "permanence" (悠) (yu) and "apple tree" (奈) (na).
• Yuna's surname Hijirisawa means "holy" (聖) (hijiri) and "marsh" (澤) (sawa).

Trivia

• Yuna's hands and mouth mimic the katakana "パ" ("pa") when she says "Pa" while striking her signature pose.
  • Her open mouth also mimics the handakuten completing the katakana for "pa".
• Yuna made her first appearance on Keke's phone screen in the Hajimari wa Kimi no Sora music video.
• Yuna's seiyuu, Chihaya Yoshitake, is best known for singing the ending songs for Tropical-Rouge! Precure and Star Twinkle Precure.
• In the Q&A section of the Sunny Passion Fanbook, some facts about Yuna are revealed:
  • Yuna says that her special skill is being flexible, but that Kanon Shibuya is more flexible than her.
